BJ Vangsness Scores Runner-Up at $40K Firecracker Bracket Nationals
Team Autoland Outlets Racing driver BJ Vangsness turned in the best performance of his bracket racing career to date with a Runner-up finish at the $40,000-to-win Firecracker Bracket Nationals at Byron Dragway on Saturday, June 28, 2025.
Driving his trusted Oldsmobile Achieva, Vangsness battled through a highly competitive field to come within striking distance of the win. The Roscoe, Illinois-based racer and Autoland Outlets team member has a history of success at this event, previously reaching the semi-finals in the $80,000 main event just one year earlier.
“What a weekend! Coming home with the runner-up finish in a $40,000 to win race is something I’ll never forget. It’s not just about the payout—it's about the incredible support system that helped make this possible. We went rounds all weekend!”
Vangsness was quick to credit the people behind his success:
“First, I want to thank my family. Your unconditional love and support are what keep me grounded and hungry for more. Special thanks to Rhonda ❤️
To Coach Randy Folk—your guidance and knowledge have been a game-changer for me. Doug and Robin Kruse, Vince Mistrata and family, Andrew Dipiazza, and the Schlueter Family—Mike, Taylor, and Clay—thank you for believing in me.
To Nick, Ron, Brian Folk and everyone at Folk Race Cars—thank you for the equipment and advice that keeps me competitive at this level.”
The Autoland Outlets team also played a vital role in preparing the car and supporting Vangsness throughout the weekend.
“Michael, Mark, Chris, Wyatt, and Logan—your help behind the scenes doesn’t go unnoticed. You all keep me rolling and make sure the car is top-notch!”
Vangsness extended heartfelt thanks to a long list of supporters, including Gentleman Jim Laughlin, Mike Cole Racing Engines, Tony and Karla Pontillo with Don’s Machine Shop, Hoosier Tires, Eric Fleming, Blake, Jeremy, Doug and Donette Vangsness, and Charlie Hamma with Digital Delay.
He also acknowledged Byron Dragway for running a smooth and professional event:
“Kevin, Jake, Veronica, Jeff, Terry, and the entire staff—thank you for putting on such an amazing race.”
Additional thanks went to Darren Burkhardt Transmissions, Richard Mason, Competitive Suspension, and FTI Performance, along with the greater bracket racing community:
“Thank you to the entire racing family—you all are the best!”
And finally, BJ dedicated the race to his grandson:
“To Hart Bryant Vangsness —you are my motivation and drive to keep going every day.”
Vangsness isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
“This runner-up is just the beginning. The people behind me are the reason I get to chase this dream. I’m proud of how we showed up—and I promise, we’re not done yet.”
